Preperation for trailer
Below shows images of the preperation for our teaser trailer. The images are of our main character Rachael king performing as Ava getting ready for us to shoot the hostage scene.
Magazine cover preperation
When planning our magazine cover we put alot of thought into how we were going to frame and shoot the main background image. We finally decided to shoot our image on location when shooting our hostage scene for our teaser trailer. Bellow shows a print screen of the images that we shot for our magazine cover.
Poster preperation
We began to make the cuts on our main characters wrists (Rachael) by using an eye liner pen to make the cuts appear to be deap. We then tied Rachaels wrists together using rope and then applied the fake blood. We made this fake blood by adding food colouring to golden syrup. This made the blood thick and make it look more realistic compared to using paint or ketchup which we previously tried to use. We began to shoot the main image for our poster by using one spot light however this appeared too bright so decided to change this to one soft box.
The images bellow show this preperation aswell as a photograph at the bottom that i took of Rhiannon (the other member in my group) taking some of the final images.
Shooting schedule for photography
For the main image on our magazine front cover we will be shooting them at the same time as we are shooting the hostage scenes for our teaser trailer. This is so that we get continuity throughout our products.
This is when we will be shooting the photography for our poster and magazine:
This is when we will be shooting the photography for our poster and magazine:
- For the images on our magazine we will be shooting them at the same time as we are shooting the hostage scenes for our teaser trailer. We will therefore be using various shots that we have shot on Friday the 13th of January. We may also be using other images that will be shot on the date shown bellow.
- For the main image on our poster we will be shooting in the college photography studio. We will be shooting this on Tuesday the 17th of January. This will be using a black backdrop as the background of the image. We have decided to do this after looking at many different horror films and poster that show that some images used for the poster are not actually shown or seen in the actual film, this is what we are planning on doing for our own poster. This day will also be giving us time to shoot any additional images that we may need.
Editing and special effects
- I have decided to look at various horror films and trailers to see what editing and special effects they have used. When doing this i have noticed some similarities.
One of the things that i noticed was the use of fast pace cuts and flashing images on screen for example used in 'When A Stranger Calls' which i looked at earlier in my primary research.
Another thing that i noticed is that some films have changed the colours of some of the clips in their films. This helps to give a different atmosphere and feel to the shots creating different feelings for the audience while watching. One of the films that i noticed this in is Paranormal Activity which alters alot of their shots to have a blue tone to it giving a layer of rawness to the film.
Another example of a film doing this is the Saw films, when they use a green tinge to their shots.
Another thing that i noticed while looking at horror films is alot of them use what looks like a crackling which makes it appear to the audience that a handheld camera is being used or that the footage from the film was actually filmed for real. This creats tension for the audience also adding an element of realism. This is 'static interferance' and is used in alot of horror films. An example of this is in Paranormal Activity. The picture below is taken from Paranormal Activity 2 showing an example of this effect.
I have also noticed alot of fades to black. This shows to the audience a passing of time. Aswell as alot of short shots and quick cuts of some of the most exciting moments from the film. This creates interest for the audience however, these shots are not always shown in chronological order. I also noticed in some trailers that there are some silences between some shots which creates tension and have an impact on the mood and the pace of the trailer.
Font tests for magazine
Looking at possible fonts for our magazine i began by looking at existing horror magazines. I looked at the fonts that they had used for the titles. These are the six favourite fonts that i looked at.

I then came together with my group as we carried on my search for a font for the magazine. We did this by searching on http://www.dafonts.com/. These are the six favourite fonts that we found.
After we found our six favourite fonts we asked 15 people which was their favourite one asking a variety of ages and genders of people. This was so that we could find our final font for our magazine title. After asking 15 people which was their favourite font we had one font that people appeared to like the best. The font that we will be using will be the one in the middle on the right, the 'face your fears' font. This was the most popular font.

Magazine mock up
After i looked at conventions for magazine covers, each member of our group has created their own mock up for our magazine cover, just like we did for our poster. This is so that we can compare all of our ideas and decide what we want our final product to look like. Bellow shows the mock up that i created.
My mock up that i have created for our poster is shown above. I would like the magazine coverto have the title of the magazine at the top in the centre. Above the title to the right i would like their to be the price of the magazine and then below both of these things to be a splash. This gives variety to our cover using different techniques to attract the audience. I would like a photograph from our film 'Obsession' to be covering the entire background of the magazine cover with a barcode on the bottom left of the page.I would also like information of what else will be in that issue on the bottom right hand side of the cover. The title and the main image covering the background of the magazine cover should tell the viewers of the magazine the genre straight away so that it is attracting the right audience. I would also like to include the title of the film 'Obsession' somewhere on the cover.
I am now going to be looking at the mock ups that my other two members of my group have created so that we can put our ideas together and decide what we would like our final magazine cover to look like before beginning to shoot photographs for it and finally making it.

Magazine cover conventions.
Like for the horror film posters i have looked at covers of magazines talking about horror films. Some that i looked at were actual horror magazine there are also some other magazines that feature horror films on their front covers.
